Redevelopment works at Mount Congreve were passed last week following a meeting of Portlaw/Kilmacthomas council members.

The objective of the works is to provide on-site accommodation, which will enhance the recently completed visitor centre works at the gardens.

The development was recently put through public consultation, before being considered by council members.

Providing additional on-site accommodation within the estate has been approved, by refurbishing two middle and upper gate lodges and installing five eco-type pods within the grounds of the estate.

The lodges will accommodate up to six persons and the ‘Pods’ will accommodate up to 16 persons and consist of three family units and two smaller ones for couples.

The installation of all necessary infrastructure to serve the pods is planned, including water, wastewater, electricity and data/comms, alongside works to landscaping, low-level lighting, signage and pedestrian walkway route improvements.

Following re-election last weekend, Cllr Liam Brazil cited Mount Congreve as one of the most important amenities in Waterford and something he is keen to continue working on during his next term in council.

“Mount Congreve is coming on leaps and bounds,” he said, “We passed it at a meeting last week and I think it’s going to be fantastic.”

The redevelopment works at Mount Congreve Estate and Gardens have been ongoing since mid-2020. A total of €7.2 million has now been invested, with funding being provided by the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Rural Regeneration Development Fund (RRDF), Fáilte Ireland and matched funding from Waterford City & County Council.

Works that have been completed to date include the conversion of the eastern wing/ old stables of the main house into a new visitor centre, incorporating a new café and retail centre.
