Off-road cycling adventure on the way to Waterford

As part of Comeraghs Wild Festival mountain bikers and gravel-cycling enthusiasts are gearing up for one of Ireland’s most exciting off-road challenges as the Nire Valley Drop 2026 returns on Saturday, July 11th, as part of the festival programme.

Following the approval of the event permit, organisers have confirmed that entries are now open for the popular event, which has earned a reputation as one of the country's premier mountain biking experiences.

Taking place in and around Ballymacarbry, the Nire Valley and the foothills of the majestic Comeragh Mountains, the event offers participants a choice of two spectacular routes. Riders can tackle a demanding and rewarding 50km mountain bike course or take on the epic 80km Gravel Grinder challenge. 

Both routes feature optional shortcut sections, ensuring the event caters for a range of abilities while still delivering an authentic and memorable off-road adventure.

Organisers say the event captures the spirit of adventure that defines the Comeraghs and the Nire Valley.

Johnny Brunnock of Waterford City & County Council said: ”There are few places where you encounter nature on your bike and where you can challenge nature. Recognised as one of the best mountain biking events in Ireland, the Nire Valley Drop has become a highlight on the cycling calendar, attracting riders from across the country, who are drawn by the area's stunning scenery, challenging terrain and unique atmosphere.” 

Set against one of Ireland's most spectacular landscapes, the event forms part of the wider Comeraghs Wild Festival programme, which celebrates the region's outstanding natural beauty, music, culture and outdoor experiences.

While the cycling event promises plenty of adrenaline for mountain bikers and gravel riders, organisers are keen to point out that there is something for everyone across the four-day festival.

Visitors and supporters travelling with competitors can take time to unwind with 'Zen in the Park', in Kilmacthomas, featuring yoga, pilates, sound therapy and wellbeing sessions designed to reconnect participants with nature. 

Guided walks across the Comeragh landscape provide opportunities to experience the mountains at a gentler pace, while a cyanotype workshop offers the chance to explore the art of sun printing using natural materials gathered from the local environment.

Those interested in culture and heritage can enjoy traditional sheep shearing demonstrations at Cooney's Yard, browse the special '100 Years of Kilmac' exhibition at The Mill in Kilmacthomas, or immerse themselves in folklore and storytelling at 'Between the Two Thresholds', in Clonea Parish Hall, exploring fairy forts, piseógs and the rich tradition of the seanchaí.

Music lovers can enjoy headline performances from The Frank and Walters and Ruaile Buaile at the landmark mountain concert at Cooney's Yard on Friday, July 10th, while acclaimed singer-songwriter Duke Special will perform an intimate concert in Clonagam Church on Sunday, July 12th. 

The festival will conclude with 'An Evening of Song and Story' at Woodhouse Estate, featuring The Backyard Band and White Horse Guitar Club.

Whether visitors come for the challenge of the trails, the beauty of the landscape, the music and culture or simply the chance to relax and reconnect, the Comeraghs Wild Festival 2026 promises unforgettable experiences across one of Ireland's most spectacular regions.
