Obituary: Remarkable Dunmore East woman played pivotal role in Waterford community

The late Margaret Walsh.

Margaret Walsh (née Doyle), 89, of Brookmount, Coxtown, Dunmore East, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and love for her family.

Margaret was born and lived her entire life in Coxtown, Dunmore East. She married Michael John Walsh at the age of 19 but sadly became widowed with young children.

Determined to provide for her family, Margaret worked tirelessly - in the Shamrock Factory and the Haven Hotel. She also made history as the first woman to drive a school bus in the South East of Ireland.

Later Margaret found companionship with her beloved partner of over 40 years, Michael Morrissey. Together, they travelled extensively, creating cherished memories across many destinations.

A crucial member of the Dunmore East community, Margaret was a founding member of Dunmore East Football Club and played a significant role in the town twinning of Dunmore East and Clohar-Carnoët in Brittany, France, fostering connections between both coastal communities.

A multi-talented woman, Margaret had a great love of flowers, gardening and cooking. Over the years she made many wedding and birthday cakes for people in the surrounding area.

Margaret had a remarkable ability to connect with people, and she took great joy in encountering former school children – now grown – who fondly remembered her and their trips to school together.

Her warmth, resilience, and dedication to those around her will be deeply missed.

Her legacy will continue through her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.

Margaret’s funeral took place on Monday, May 19, at the Holy Cross Church, Killea, Dunmore East, following removal from Thompson’s Funeral Home, Barrack Street, Waterford city. Her requiem mass was celebrated by Father Bobby Power and Father PJ Breen, with beautiful music performed by soloist Sarah Jane Lavery.

Margaret was buried in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Margaret is predeceased by her husband Michael Walsh, sister Dinah O’Regan, partner Michael Morrissey and nephew Ringo O’Regan.

She will be deeply missed by her sons, daughter, daughters-in-law, son-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren, nephews, niece, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.
