North Quays: One Year later

The multi-million euro works in Waterford are progressing on schedule
North Quays: One Year later

It's almost a year since works commenced on the North Quays.

It’s nearly a year since construction works commenced on the North Quays main contract, and representatives from the project recently commented that works are continuing to progress well and remain on schedule to be completed in 2025.

With the brighter evenings, the progress is more visible throughout the site, and most notable are the Public Transport Hub building and the piers for the Sustainable Transport Bridge.

Progress

Construction contracts for the new Ferrybank Pump Station are now complete. This new infrastructure replaces the old pumping station on site to improve wastewater capacity and sustainability for the Ferrybank area.

The permanent cofferdam and piling works for the bridge substructure are now nearing completion and steel fixing and concrete works for the foundation pads and piers are progressing inside the cofferdams.

The steel deck for the bridge is being fabricated and assembled in Belgium for shipping to Waterford in four sections which will be installed on site.

Piling works for the new public plaza at the Clock Tower on the South Quays are complete and a new plaza floor slab is currently being constructed.

Works to the Transport Hub building have progressed to first floor where the main concourse, ticketing, offices and conveniences will be located. Other works items such as access lifts, rail platforms and rail track infrastructure continue to progress.

Flood defence works for the existing and new rail infrastructure will commence later in the summer.

The ongoing construction of multi-modal access bridges, cycle links, accommodation works and the realignment of Abbey Road aims to provide future connectivity between Ferrybank, the greenway corridor and the North Quays.

Traffic Management

The current phase of roadworks on Fountain Street will be completed in June, and traffic management continues to be operated on a phased basis in an effort to minimise disruption.

Waterford Council commented: "Access to local businesses will be maintained throughout these works. Traffic management continues to be operated on a phased basis in an effort to minimise disruption. Waterford City and County Council appreciates the community’s continued patience and cooperation while these improvement works progress.

"Safety is of paramount importance, and we would ask all drivers to abide by the 25km/h speed limit through the works. Please be aware of cyclists and do not overtake within the works area. We also ask that pedestrians continue to utilise the directional signage and utilised the designated pedestrian crossings."

Additionally, deep pipe installation across Abbey Road will require a road closure to ensure safe operations.

This work is being scheduled during this year’s school summer holidays.

The works are currently being planned and further information will be made available in advance.
