A county Waterford councillor has become a qualified plumber, completing an apprenticeship he started before he was elected.

Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy said the milestone was “a long time coming” and something he was determined to finish despite the demands of public life.

“Trades are the backbone of our local economy,” he said.

“Before I ever thought about running for election, I was on the tools every day. Completing the qualification means a lot to me, and it’s something I’ll carry with pride,” said Cllr Mulcahy.

The councillor thanked those who supported him throughout his training.

“I want to sincerely thank Kevin Henley, my mentor and a long-time friend, for all the training, knowledge and guidance he passed on to me over the years. Kevin played a massive part in shaping me as a tradesman,” said Cllr Mulcahy.

He also acknowledged Hanrahan Builders for giving him the chance to serve his time and learn his craft.

“I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity they gave me. It opened doors and gave me skills that have stayed with me ever since.”

And Cllr Mulcahy added a special word of thanks to his wife, describing her as “the rock of our family”.

“None of this would have been possible without her,” said Cllr Mulcahy.

Cllr Mulcahy said that his background as a tradesman continues to influence how he approaches public service, especially when dealing with housing, water infrastructure and rural development issues across West Waterford.

He hopes his journey encourages more young people to consider apprenticeships and that he will continue to represent his community with the “perspective of a tradesman”.

“There’s huge pride in a trade. We need more apprentices, more skilled workers and more encouragement for people to follow this path. It’s a brilliant career,” said Cllr Mulcahy.
