390 safety camera zones will be installed nationwide in 2026

An additional 13 safety camera zones will be introduced across Waterford in 2026.

The cameras will be placed in high-risk locations such as school areas, road works and locations specifically requested by the local community.

Safety cameras are typically deployed in areas where there is a history of speed-related collisions.

A decade-high 186 road deaths were recorded in 2025 as of December 23.

“There is a small persistent cohort of selfish, dangerous drivers who choose to drive in excess of the posted speed limit,” said An Garda Síochána Assistant Commissioner Roads Policing & Community Engagement Catharina Gunn.

“These drivers put themselves and members of their community at risk, particularly children, older people, cyclists and other motorists.

"An Garda Síochána’s priority is to ensure that the vast majority of people who use the roads responsibly are not put in danger by this minority of reckless drivers who continue to drive at excessive speed.”
