‘Need to keep up pressure' in N25 campaign highlighting Waterford to New Ross safety issues

Approximately 500 people attended a public meeting in the Rhu Glenn Hotel recently to highlight and discuss ongoing concerns about road safety on the N25 between Waterford and New Ross.

In the past 20 years, 84 people have lost their lives on the N25.

The recent meeting was organised by the N25 Waterford to Glenmore Road Safety Campaign.

The campaign group have proposed a set of short-term measures that would improve safety on the road, including clearing ditches at junctions, traffic calming measures and additional signage.

Kilkenny councillors from the Piltown municipality commended the organising committee for arranging the productive and impactful meeting.

Cathaoirleach of the district, Cllr Pat Dunphy, said that both the N25 and N24 remain "both hugely significant in the area".

“I’d like to compliment everybody at the Rhu Glenn meeting and the way the meeting was conducted," he said. "Everyone was to the point and very upfront in their experience and what they think should happen.

“Apart from the N25, we also have the N24, our last death there was less than a year ago through Mooncoin village. These are ongoing things that people might not even be aware of, so it’s an area we need to keep communicating with the Minister.

“Funding is a political decision for both of those roads, and we need to keep the pressure on.”

Tomás Breathnach similarly commended the local organising committee, saying, “It’s awfully important that we say we recognise how well organised that meeting was, the way it was promoted and the way it was conducted.

"It gave a platform to everyone to come together and talk about the issues there.”

Cllr Ger Frisby, meanwhile, added that a follow-up meeting is due to take place in September and is currently being organised.

He added that the N24 also remains a pertinent issue in the region, and that a similar committee being set up may yield positive results in spreading awareness.

"I think something needs to be done in the Carrigeen and Mooncoin area. If there was an action group out there that could have a public meeting, that’s the way to go."

He further congratulated organisers who put a "huge amount of work" into the N25 evening.

“I think the meeting did its job. It was a huge success and the numbers that were there is a testament to the organising group. The bonus now will be the follow-up in September."
