The upcoming Golden Jubilee is the ninth time the group have gathered for a reunion

This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Mount Sion (Cnoc Sion) Leaving Certificate class of 1974.

The reunion includes more than just those who sat the Leaving Cert in June 1974, it is for all past pupils who began first year in August 1969, which was the final year in the old secondary school.

Those who moved on during the following five years are also included and the reunion is also for 7th years, those who sat their Leaving Cert in 1973 and decided to repeat in 1974.

The reunion is organised by a committee consisting of Shem Cooper, Brendan McEvoy, John Nolan, Konor Halpin, Bryan Power and John O’Donohoe.

This year’s reunion event is the ninth in total. The first took place in September 1984, the 10-year anniversary. The group have meet up every five years since.

To mark the Golden Jubilee this year, a number of activities have been organised by the Reunion Committee.

The main event will be held on Friday, June 21. It begins at 6.30pm with a memorial mass at the Edmund Rice Chapel in Mount Sion, in memory of deceased students.

The Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Liam Power, a former past pupil of Mount Sion himself.

Photo shoot

There will be a photo shoot afterwards on the steps of the monastery, similar to the one taken in May 1974.

There will then be a get together at the Mount Sion Centre, at 8pm, to celebrate the anniversary.

Most notably, the reunion serves as a remembrance of deceased students, including Ger Kennedy, Peter O’Rourke, Brian Hunt, Victor Curry, Gary Farrell, Pat Waters, Denis O’Neill, Gerry Foley and Joe Ryan.
