New figures released by Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan TD showed 1,388 criminal offences were committed by individuals on bail in the Waterford/Kilkenny policing region in 2025.

A total of 38,200 incidents committed by individuals on bail were recorded nationwide.

Theft (10,104), Order Offences (9,789) and Court Related Offences/Bail (5,377) were the most common offences.

Responding to a parliamentary question from Sinn Féin Justice spokesperson Matt Carthy TD, Minister O’Callaghan said: “It is totally unacceptable that offences are committed by people on bail.

“That is a direct breach of their promise made when bail is granted by the court.

“While bail laws in Ireland are comprehensive, I am committed to ensuring they are fit for purpose while ensuring fundamental rights principles are adhered to.”

Minister O’Callaghan said that several recommendations “to ensure the criminal justice system effectively mitigates against risks that may be associated with individuals on bail” are under active consideration.
