There were scenes of mixed emotion in a County Waterford school in the run up to Christmas as one of its teaching staff retired after a 30-year career.

A spokesperson for Ardscoil na Mara, in Tramore, commented: "It was with mixed emotions we celebrated Ms Murphy's retirement this week from Ardscoil na Mara, Tramore. Ms Murphy has been a member of staff and dedicated English teacher for 30 years."

Ms Murphy taught first in Stella Maris and for the last 11 years in the new amalgamated school.

"It was a wonderful occasion as students lined the corridors to wish Ms Murphy well," said the spokesperson. The popular teacher's English students held up meaningful quotations as she walked through the corridors. A celebration took place in the staff room where all the staff wore red and Liverpool jerseys in acknowledgement of her favourite football team.
