One of the country’s most talented young boxers, Michael Reilly, received a Mayoral Reception in his hometown of Waterford today.

Last week, the St. Paul’s boxer won the National Under 19 title at 55kg with a 5-0 win over Mullingar Elite boxing club member Edward Corcoran.

He became an eighth-time National champion in the process.

The teenager has already enjoyed considerable success in his boxing career and has competed at national and international levels.

He was also recently honoured at the Waterford Garda Youth Awards, in recognition of his boxing achievements and his journey in overcoming social challenges.

"To be competing at the national and internationally level, requires not just physical ability, but mental focus, determination and a serious commitment to growth and excellence" he added.

"On behalf of the people of Waterford, I want to congratulate you, your family and your club on everything you’ve accomplished so far. Keep representing our county, your community and our country with great pride.

"Your achievements already speak volumes, but it is clear you are only getting started. We are all excited to see where your journey takes you next."

Mayor Ryan also commended the pivotal figures in Michael's life, who have given him guidance and encouragement along the way.

"Behind every great athlete is a strong support network" he said, "and Michael's journey has been shaped by the guidance of his father and coach Paddy and his uncle Willie who has been a steady presence in his corner.

"Their encouragement, belief and hard work as a team deserves recognition here today as well."

"I want to say thanks very much to my father and my uncle for coaching me and helping me everyday. I wouldn't be able to box, I wouldn’t be able to do anything without them.

"They put a lot of hard work in and I want to say thanks very much to them and to everyone who came here today to support me."
