Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Jason Murphy, extended the honour of a Mayoral Reception to popular social media account, Waterford In Your Pocket (WIYP), in one of his last engagements as Mayor ahead of June's Plenary Council AGM.

"We're here today to celebrate the incredible journey of Waterford In Your Pocket, a local passion project that has grown into a powerful platform showcasing the very best of our county for over 13 years," said Mayor Murphy, paying tribute to Paul Dower, founder of WIYP, his wife Jean and son Aaron, who are all involved in the project.

WIYP began by simply sharing photos of Waterford on Facebook, and has grown into something much bigger, enjoyed by Waterfordians both at home and abroad. It has partnered with beloved local festivals and initiatives, such as Summer in the City, Spraoi, Winterval, Imagine Arts Festival and the St Patrick's Day Festival.

"Since its beginnings WIYP has reached over 50 million people around the world through its posts, putting Waterford firmly on the global map as a place of history, beauty and community spirit," the Mayor of Waterford said.

"Waterford In Your Pocket continues to be a shining example of community storytelling, driven by love for place and people. Here's to their incredible work - past, present and future."
