West Waterford councillor Donnchadh Mulcahy has called for community support in tackling fly-tipping.
The councillor is asking anyone who comes across incidents to report them.
Over recent weeks, Cllr Mulcahy has reported a number of incidents across the district, with rubbish being dumped along rural roads, at scenic locations and in areas that should never be treated as dumping grounds.
“Whenever I’m travelling around West Waterford and I come across dumping, I photograph it, get the location and log it with the Council. I would encourage everyone else to do the same and report what they see.
“West Waterford has some of the most beautiful countryside in the country. It is extremely frustrating to travel along a rural road and find bags of rubbish, household waste or food simply thrown at the side of the road,” said Cllr Mulcahy.
One incident highlighted by the councillor is the remains of a birthday party, including cake, sweets and food waste dumped out in the open.
He said community reporting can play an important role in tackling the problem and encouraged people to report incidents as soon as they come across them.
“This type of waste could have been disposed of properly so easily. There really is no excuse for driving out into the countryside and leaving it for somebody else to deal with.” “I want to acknowledge our Environment Section and the staff on the ground. I regularly send reports into them, and they do their best to follow up and have these areas dealt with. They are cleaning up rubbish that should never have been dumped there in the first place,” said Cllr Mulcahy.
Anyone who comes across illegal dumping in West Waterford can contact Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy on 086 399 1153 and he will have the incident logged with the relevant section of the Council.
“The more eyes we have across our communities, the better. If you see dumping, take note of the location and report it. If you see something suspicious, don’t ignore it.
“We all have a responsibility to look after our countryside. The message to those responsible for fly tipping is simple: stop dumping your rubbish on our rural roads and show some respect for the communities that live there,” said Cllr Mulcahy.
