Man caught driving under influence of drugs in Waterford with no insurance

Cassidy was caught driving with no insurance and under the influence of cannabis.

A Waterford man was discovered driving under the influence of drugs after being stopped by a Garda for no insurance.

John Cassidy, of 99 Priory Lawn, Ballybeg, was charged with driving under the influence of cannabis, no insurance contrary to Section 56 of the Road Traffic Act and possession of cannabis.

On February 17, 2025, on duty Garda David Finnane detected a Golf car driving down the Cork Road with no insurance. Garda Finnane pulled over the vehicle and spoke to Cassidy. Garda Finnane smelled cannabis coming from Cassidy and a roadside test revealed that he had 2.3mg of cannabis in his system.

In Waterford District Court, Judge Mark O’Connell heard that the accused had five previous convictions, including driving without insurance and criminal damage. Solicitor Hilary Delahanty said that Cassidy was a 36-year-old man with a "long work history" and "no issues" in relation to alcohol or drugs. Mr Delahanty noted that his client was found in possession of €18 worth of cannabis.

Judge O’Connell ordered Cassidy to pay a fine of €200 within the next three months for the charge of possession.

Cassidy also received a mandatory disqualification from driving, adjourned for one year.
