Waterford U15 team that won the Humphrey Kelliher Mill Street Cup.
Waterford rounded off their U15 campaign with a deserved six-point victory over Wexford to claim the Humphrey Kelliher Mill Street Cup on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at a well-presented St Saviour's GAA Club.
In ideal summer conditions, both teams were slow to settle, with Waterford moving into an early 0-3 to 0-1 lead. However, by the 15th minute, Wexford had responded well with two well-taken points to leave the sides level at 0-3 apiece.
From there, Waterford began to take control around midfield and played the better football, creating several goal opportunities. They were denied on a number of occasions by an excellent Wexford goalkeeper, who produced a string of impressive saves. Waterford did, however, continue to add points and went into the break leading 0-7 to 0-3.
Waterford remained in control for long periods of the second half. With substitutions introduced, they maintained their momentum and added two goals. A standout moment came when Waterford's number 11 landed a superb two-point effort from distance, helping to extend the lead to nine points.
Credit must go to Wexford, who responded with a late goal of their own to remain within touching distance. However, it was not enough, as Waterford ran out deserving winners on a final scoreline of 2-12 to 1-9.
Thanks are due to referee Jack Bray for his officiating, allowing a free-flowing and sporting contest to develop. Appreciation is also extended to St Saviour's GAA Club for hosting the game, with the pitch in excellent condition despite the recent dry spell.
The result confirmed Waterford at the top of the group on eight points, following victories over Wexford, Westmeath, Kilkenny and Antrim, with their only defeat coming in the opening round against Wicklow. Following the final whistle, the Waterford captain was presented with the Humphrey Kelliher Mill Street Cup, much to the delight of the home supporters.
Beyond the trophy success, the campaign was marked by strong squad development, with all players receiving opportunities throughout the season.
Waterford played 10 games in total, including championship fixtures and challenge matches against Tipperary, Wexford, Cork and Kilkenny. These games proved invaluable in the team's development. Clear progress was evident in their performances, confidence and understanding of the game as the year progressed.
The cup victory provides a fitting end to a season of growth and learning, with all players gaining valuable experience as they now look ahead to competing at U16 level next year.
