Man appears in court charged in connection with Waterford church stabbing incident
The man appeared at Waterford Courthouse.
A man has been charged in relation to a stabbing incident at a church in Waterford.
On Tuesday morning, July 21, a woman was stabbed at Holy Cross Church in Tramore during a Mass service.
The woman, aged in her 50’s, was taken to University Hospital Waterford (UHW) with serious injuries.
This morning (Wednesday, July 22), Niall Cummins was charged with assault contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person act.
The 36-year-old, with an address of The Willows, Clarinwood, Tramore, Co. Waterford, appeared before Judge John Cheatle at Waterford District Court.
He appeared with no legal representation.
Sergeant Rob Flynn informed Judge Staunton that he arrested Cummins at 10 am on Tuesday, July 21 at his address in Tramore. The accused made no reply after being cautioned.
Mr Cummins appeared in court wearing a brown zip-up hoodie and black cargo trousers.
When asked by Judge Cheatle if he intended to apply for bail he replied: “No, not really I don’t think so.”
Inspector Niall Daly requested that a psychiatric evaluation be carried out on the accused.
Mr Cummins will re-appear via video link at Waterford District Court on Tuesday, July 28.
