Inner Ring Road

Waterford City & County Council are proposing to undertake the construction of a two kilometre long Active Travel scheme along the Inner Ring Road from Ashe Road (R686/L1530 junction) as far as the Passage Road (R680/R709 junction).

The proposed works will include the construction of a dedicated two-way protected cycleway on one side of the route through the reallocation of existing road space.

Two traffic lanes which range from 3 metres to 3.75 metres wide are planned, as is junction tightening measures along the route and reconstruction of the Folly Roundabout to current design standards.

An upgrade of roundabouts and junctions is proposed to accommodate both vehicle and active travel user movements.

Proposed works also include the use of L90343 Richardson’s Folly as a shared street with the construction of new shared footpath areas.

Outlined in plans are footpath improvements at select locations along route, construction of new pedestrian crossings and an upgrade of existing signalised crossings.

Waterford City and County Council outline that the ‘objective of the scheme is to provide Active Travel infrastructure along the Inner Ring Road.

‘The scheme aims to enhance safety for vulnerable road users, to improve connections to existing footpaths and provide pedestrian crossing points close to natural desire lines.’
