Locals have their say on Ardmore plans

A new public realm and traffic calming measures are being developed on Main Street, Ardmore.

Waterford Council is seeking public feedback on the proposals, which include new pedestrian crossings, street furniture, seating areas and new coach stop.

Planning documentation outlines that the main objective of the proposal is to ensure safer movement along Main Street and the seafront for vulnerable road users.

‘Enhancing the public realm will provide a ‘destination’ at the end of Main Street, enabling locals and visitors to meet, sit, or admire the view of the sea’, planning reports state.

The plans are subsequent to a string of developments that have taken place in the village of late, including a €1.3 million Watersport Facility building which is nearing completion.

Additionally, a new relief road and associated car park in the village is due to commence construction in the coming months.

Public response

The latest set of plans have been subject to twenty submissions from the public thus far.

One of the most prevalent observations is flood risk.

One submission said that roads in the area were flooded just days ago.

“Please review and access flooding reports” the submission added.

One local business has concerns that planters placed along footpaths outside their premises will impede on their ability to operate forklifts.

Meanwhile, a representative from the Ardmore Tidy Towns Association called for the addition of outdoor gym equipment in the plans.

Another local said that the proposal to remove a roundabout and to locate the coach stop along the path to the beach is misguided.

"Whilst appreciating that a coach stop is necessary, the appropriate place for this is in the current parking area to the east of the church and not on the main road to the beach", the submission suggested.
