Calls were made this week to add lifebuoys to the various lakes scattered across the Comeragh mountains, which have become increasingly popular for visitors in recent weeks due to good weather.

At last week’s Comeragh district meeting, Cllr Seanie Power enquired about the possibility of adding lifebuoys to lakes such as Coumshingaun and Crotty’s.

Cllr Power said, “I got a phone call from a lady recently saying her kids and friends had been up at the lakes in the Comeraghs and she highlighted the point that there’s no lifebuoys there.

“I think it hugely important to have those considering some of the tragedies we had recently.”

Cllr Power asked Waterford Council’s Senior Management team if the responsibility falls on the council to place the lifebuoys.

Director of Services Gabriel Hynes said it is something he will enquire about, but that Cllr Power makes "a valid point" in relation to water safety.

“Its something I will take to our water safety team to see what would be the appropriate intervention” Mr. Hynes said.
