“Left with only the clothes on their back”: Kilmacow couple’s house destroyed in fire

“They have been left in the position of absolutely everything they owned and cherished being burnt to a crisp and being left with only the clothes on their back which doesn't even include a pair of shoes,” Ms Lynch explained.

A tragic fire engulfed the home of a local couple from Dunkitt, Kilmacow yesterday as the family appeal for donations to the couple in the aftermath of the blaze.

Patrick and Maria Walsh of Dunkitt, Kilmacow both survived the house fire, which took place in the early morning hours of Monday, September 16. Their family has appealed on social media for people to donate to the couple who were unable to insure their home due to financial struggles amid a family illness.

Mandy Lynch, a relative of the unfortunate couple, has started a GoFundMe to raise funds.

“They thankfully survived, which we are all forever grateful for.”

Ms Lynch continued, “They have been left in the position of absolutely everything they owned and cherished being burnt to a crisp and being left with only the clothes on their back, which doesn't even include a pair of shoes.”

Ms Lynch explained that the couple had encountered some financial difficulties in recent years due to a severe brain issue that Mrs Walsh suffered.

Her husband, Patrick, then left his permanent job with Irish Rail and became a full-time carer for his wife.

Sadly, illness struck the family again, with Patrick recently being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing radiation. In the next few weeks he will be undergoing major surgery, Ms Lynch explained.

“They are the most selfless family and do not deserve this,” Ms Lynch explained, “Nothing will bring back what they have lost but I want to fundraise to at least try and get them clothes, food, and possibly a mobile home to live in while they try and seek help."
