Large solar farm proposed in rural Waterford

A planning application for a large solar farm spanning across five townlands in county Waterford has been submitted.

The townlands are addressed to both Portlaw and Kilmeaden, and the development is planned approximately 8.8km west of Waterford city.

The applicant, Cullenagh Solar Farm Limited, are seeking a ten year planning permission for a solar farm on a 67.3 hectare site 

Perimeter security fencing, security gates, a new permanent site entrance on the L4026 and drainage infrastructure is also proposed.

A 40-year operational lifespan is being sought.

Planning reports state that at the end of the proposed development’s lifetime, it will be completely dismantled and the site will be restored to its preconstruction state.

Reports also outline that staff undertook door-to-door engagement with residents within a 500m radius of the proposed solar panels.

Key concerns raised as a result of this community engagement included the potential for the solar farm to devalue nearby properties. 

Residents also raised concerns surrounding increased traffic volumes during construction, negative visual impacts, and the 'perceived industrialisation of what is currently an agricultural setting.'

The local planning authority will come to a decision on the planning application by November 1.

The application contributes to Waterford's growing reputation as an ideal county for solar farm developments.
