Lack of wastewater repairs

A new report from the EPA has revealed that in Waterford from 2013 to 2023 there were 53 system failings with 45% of these fixed by the end of 2023.
Waterford currently has the lowest repair rate of wastewater systems in the country.
A new report from the EPA has revealed that in Waterford, 40 inspections were carried out in 2023 and from 2013 to 2023 there were 53 system failings with 45% of these fixed by the end of 2023.
Nationally, 80% of systems that failed from 2013 to 2023 were fixed by the end of 2023.
The report urges local authorities to ensure that faulty systems are repaired quicker. It says, “Enforcement of advisory notices by local authorities is inconsistent. Counties with significant numbers of failures, combined with a low level of resolution, are Waterford, Roscommon and Kilkenny.
"Local authorities need to increase enforcement, including prosecution where warranted, to resolve faulty DWWTS so that the environment and public health is protected.”
