Bathers are being advised not to swim at Annestown Beach, after the detection of increased levels of bacteria.

Waterford City and County Council have advised visitors to the beach to wash their hands before preparing food and to avoid swallowing or splashing water.

Pregnant people and people with weakened immune systems are advised to avoid swimming.

People are also advised to avoid swimming with an open wound.

The Council stated: "High levels of bacteria are usually short-lived and most bathers are unlikely to experience any illness. This advisory will remain in place until further notice."
