West Waterford councillor Donnchadh Mulcahy has said illegal dumping is damaging towns, wildlife and community pride.

Highlighting recent incidents, the councillor said illegal dumping is on the rise at bottle and clothes banks as well as in ditches.

“We need to see real accountability when it comes to waste disposal.

"People have a responsibility to deal with their rubbish properly, and if they choose not to, then there should be clear consequences.

"With the public’s help, we can target problem areas and put a stop to this once and for all,” said Cllr Mulcahy.

Cllr Mulcahy is asking households to dispose of their rubbish responsibly.

He said that if a disposal bank is full, take their waste home and come back later.

Rubbish, he said, is ending up in the Blackwater and Bride and he is asking the community to pull together come together to tackle what is becoming a crisis.

“A small few are taking the good out of it for everyone else.

"Overflowing bring-banks and rural fly-tipping aren’t harmless.

"They cost the public money, damage our rivers and undermine the huge voluntary effort that keeps our towns and villages looking their best,” said Cllr Mulcahy.

Dumping can be reported to Waterford City and County Council.

If you can, you should take a photo and note the location or Eircode.

Cllr Mulcahy said if you have issues, you can contact him on 086 399 1153.
