'I'll never go down that road again' - man with 95 convictions appeals sentence severity
Hennessy appeared in Waterford Courthouse.
A man with 95 previous convictions has been ordered to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for two years.
Gary Hennessy (38), of 105 Kilcohan Park, Waterford City, appealed the severity of his sentence for a litany of offences he carried out between 2023 and 2024.
On the night of August 10, 2023, he committed burglary at an office in Waterford City, causing €160 worth of damage. 10 days later, Gardaí recovered seven benzodiazepine tablets from Hennessy. Both charges were taken into consideration.
On August 29, 2024, Hennessy spat in the face of a Garda officer on patrol in Ballybeg.
Judge Christopher Callan noted that Hennessy had 95 previous convictions and has been "in and out of prison".
Defence counsel Tom Giles Kelly, BL, told Judge Callan that his client was "making great progress" in prison and was willing to engage with the probation services pending his release.
The court heard that addiction was the backdrop to Hennessy's offending. Hennessy told the Judge: "I'll never go down that road again."
