The iconic Paddy Foley’s pub in Dungarvan has changed hands after 46 years.

The sale of the pub owned by Mary and Billy Foley on the corner of Grattan Square was confirmed by Sherry Fitzgerald Reynolds on social media this week.

“We were delighted to close the sale of the famous Paddy Foley’s Pub on the corner of our bustling Grattan Square this week.

"This sale marks the end of an era for our vendors Mary & Billy Foley who have run a most successful show for over 40 years.

"We wish them both all the best in their retirement and thank them for entrusting us with the sale of such an iconic building.

"Best wishes to the new owner, who was a pleasure to deal with and will continue the legacy! Business as usual at Paddy Foley’s,” wrote the estate agent.

Dungarvan councillor Damien Geoghegan said the sale was the end of an era and wished the couple well in their retirement on social media.

He said Paddy Foleys is one of the best pubs in Ireland and holds great memories from sports to birthdays to christenings, weddings and wakes.

“The decency, the kindness and generosity of Billy and Mary were their hallmarks.

"Shy by nature, they were always pleasant and always nice. You couldn't ask for any more.

"It was never an issue for Mary and Billy to put their hand in their pocket and provide generous sponsorship and support for so many clubs, civic events and so many worthy causes.

“I wish them and their family nothing but the very best as they now step away from 12 Grattan Square, and I want to wish the new owner, Mark, all the very best in the months and years ahead, as he now takes the helm at the famous Paddy Foley's,” said Cllr Geoghegan.
