How to keep your pets safe during Storm Éowyn

The roar of the strong winds and heavy rain could be upsetting to your pets, some of whom have far stronger senses than humans.
With Storm Eowyn set to land in Waterford tomorrow, the roar of the strong winds and heavy rain could be upsetting to your pets, some of whom have far stronger senses than humans.
The Status Red Wind warning for Waterford will bring gale-force winds with wind gusts in excess of 130km per hour from 2am to 10am Friday, January 24.
The experts at Petmania have suggested these tips to keep your pets safe during the Status Red weather conditions.
The experts suggest that you create a safe area for your pets indoors: "Storms can be overwhelming for pets due to loud noises and changes in pressure. Designate a quiet, secure spot in your home where your pet can feel safe and shielded from the outside chaos."
"Use familiar bedding, toys, and even calming sprays or pheromone diffusers. If possible, set up the space away from windows or areas where the wind might sound loudest," the Petmania team said.
Your pets "will still need their walks and bathroom breaks, but it’s essential to do so safely", Petmania experts have advised, "Take them out well before the storm hits and keep these outings brief. Use a secure leash or harness to prevent any escapes, particularly if sudden gusts of wind or noises frighten them."
The public has been under to "keep all pets—dogs, cats, and even farm animals—indoors" during the storm due to the risk of flying debris and flooding during Storm Éowyn.
"If you must take your pet outside, ensure they are supervised and only for essential reasons."
To aid with this, Petmania has suggested that pet owners ensure that the enclosures for outdoor pets are moved indoors or into sheltered and safe areas: "Check that they are dry, warm, and protected from drafts. Add extra bedding or insulation for comfort and warmth."
"Pets are highly attuned to their owners’ emotions and may react to your stress or anxiety," the Petmania team has advised, "Stay calm and speak to your pet in a soothing tone. If possible, engage them with games, gentle grooming, or other activities to distract them from the storm."
It is advised to prepare an emergency kit of essentials for your pet as well, Petmania said, suggesting pet owners prepare the following for their furry friends:
- A supply of pet food and clean water (enough for 3 days).
- Blankets or towels to keep them warm.
- Any required medications.
- A leash, harness, and travel carrier in case of evacuation.
- Updated identification on their collar and microchip.
“Storms like Eowyn can be unsettling for pets, but with some preparation, we can ensure their safety and comfort,” Petmania’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Emily Miller, added.
“By setting up a secure indoor space and planning ahead, pet owners can make a big difference for their furry family members.”
