Waterford City writer, poet and spoken word artist, Wayne Power, is gearing up to debut his work-in-progress new play, in Garter Lane’s theatre development space, A Little Room.

Titled 'Kicking and Screaming', the play follows Stevie and Dylan, who are down and out in John Street.

The pair are facing into a quarter-life crisis feeling. They’ve seen all Waterford has to offer, and slept with it too.

As they contemplate wanderlust and navigate this crisis, there’s still Stevie’s mother Beryl and her impending divorce to deal with, and a spark of romance that may be enough to stick around for.

For all concerned, they’re guaranteed to face into a new chapter of life 'Kicking and Screaming'.

Previously, in 2023, Wayne was resident in Garter Lane’s, A Little Room with his debut play ‘Dress You Up’.

The play went on to full production with Stagemad Theatre Company in October 2024, playing for four consecutive nights in Bank Lane, as part of the Imagine Arts festival.

It played to over 200 people and received strong acclaim.

In 2020, he released his debut poetry collection titled, ‘Everyone’s A Star After Midnight’.

Playwright Jim Nolan described it as collection that “will speak for and to a lot of his generation”.

Nolan subsequently launched Power’s follow-up collection in 2021 , the gritty ‘Neon Hearts and The Angry Mob’.

He released his third collection, ‘Only When I’m Dancing Can I Feel This Free‘, in October 2023 as part of the Waterford Writers Weekend.

Local arts critic, Liam Murphy, named it as Best Book of 2023.

Power has also released six spoken word videos.

His most recent, ‘A Place for Us’, was premiered by Hot Press magazine.

Directed by Cian Cusack, the piece was a rally cry for the queer community, written in response to a rise in hate crimes.

In October 2022, he founded the bi-monthly event ‘Slip of the Tongue’, a curated event which fuses spoken word, poetry, live music, drag performance and comedy.

The upcoming event is free, however, booking is essential via garterlane.ie.

The event takes place on December 2, at 6pm.
