Eyewitness to the war in Ukraine to speak in Lismore

Julian Evans delivering cars in Ukraine
For nearly 30 years, Julian Evans has been writing about Ukraine and since 2015, he has reported from the front lines in Donetsk and Mariupol.
Appearing at the Lismore Immrama Festival of Travel Writing on Friday, June 13, he will speak about his new book, Undefeatable: Odesa in Love and War, a deeply personal memoir of Odesa that blends the political and intimate.
It offers fresh insight into Russia’s war on Ukraine, and the city’s enduring spirit.
Julian is more than an eyewitness to history, he’s also an active participant in shaping it.
“I keep on fundraising. I drive cars to Ukraine for medics and troops. Until the war is over it’s impossible to concentrate on anything else” he said.
Evans first discovered Odesa by accident in 1994 and says he was immediately captivated by the city, an eccentric, piecrust-baroque port long shaped by smugglers, immigrants, poets, and divas.
When he returned five years later, he met Natasha, a local painter. They married in a monastery opposite the railway station and began a family.
Now based in south-west England, Julian has spent much of the last three years shuttling between the UK and Ukraine, writing, reporting, and volunteering.
Most recently, he featured on 'Ukraine:The Latest', the world’s most listened-to and award-winning podcast covering the war in Ukraine, with over 100 million downloads.
Julian will appear at the Lismore Festival of Travel Writing on Friday, June 13, at 8pm in the Lismore Heritage Centre.
Join him for a powerful evening as he shares a firsthand, eyewitness account of history in the making.
Tickets for the upcoming event are €20 and available now at lismore-immrama.com
