Glamping accommodation in the works in picturesque county Waterford location
St. Declan's walk along the coast near Ardmore. Provision has been made for the construction of glamping pods in the area.
A planning application was submitted to Waterford City and County Council this week for the construction of glamping accommodation in Ardmore, Co. Waterford.
A total of five glamping pods are planned at a 0.9 acre site, which is currently in agricultural use in the Dysert area.
The site is a long, narrow, rectangular parcel of land that sits adjacent to St. Declan’s Walk and the coastline to the east.
Car parking for up to five cars and dedicated cycle parking will be located within the site on the western boundary.
A small caretaker storage unit of approximately 13sqm is also proposed along the north-west boundary.
A design report prepared on behalf of the applicants outlines that the development of glamping in the area aims to support both tourism and biodiversity in the region.
The report says: “Our client's wish to set up a business that will support tourism in the area and improve biodiversity on the site, returning the majority of the site to its original and ideal habitat.”
“Our client's aim is to model the highest standards in sustainable tourism, both in the manner of construction, energy efficiency and creation of habitat for biodiversity."
The applicant intends to employ a local site manager.
The pods themselves will be of timber frame construction.
Each pod will consist of a double bedroom, a shower room and an efficient kitchen, living, dining-room, which can double as a second bedroom with a sofa bed if required.
Each pod will float on four steel footings, which the planning application says will create "minimum impact on the site".
The site experiences strong winds from the west so the pods are staggered to create sheltered external living areas at the gable end of each unit.
A decision is expected to be made by Waterford City and County Council by July 8.
