Funeral takes place of Waterford cyclist who died in Paris Metro

The late Tomás Walsh.

The funeral of Waterford cyclist Tomás Walsh took place on Saturday, following his passing in France on July 21.

The 25-year-old died suddenly in a Paris Metro Station whilst holidaying in the country to watch the Tour De France.

Mourners gathered at St. Nicholas Church, Faithlegg, over the weekend to remember the young man who was described by family members as "an exceptional young man".

His love for farming, and his many warm memories shared alongside Comeragh Cycling Club, were recounted in touching eulogies delivered by loved ones.

Tomás' sister reminisced on his childhood spent in Waterford, saying that "from the day he was born, Tomás was special."

He had a carefree childhood together with friends and family, spending his early years roaming the fields, building dens, and enjoying time outside with his sisters and cousins on the farm.

A pivotal moment in his life took place when he was 12, when he took part in the 50km Sean Kelly Cycle in Dungarvan.

It was at this time that he "caught the cycling bug".

He joined the Comeragh Cycling Club when he was 14 and so began a whole new chapter in his life

"He met a fantastic bunch of lads" at the club, and together they raced and trained with each other all over Ireland and abroad, becoming the best of friends.

His passion for cycling was matched by his passion for farming

He worked hard, long hours on the farm, and was always thinking ahead, conjuring up exciting plans to take the farm into the future.

Apart from cycling and farming, he loved music, hurling and travelling, and was proud to be able to speak Irish.

In her touching eulogy, Tomás' sister described him as "thoughtful, kind, passionate and loyal, fun-loving and funny."

"He loved life, his family and his many, many friends. We are proud and blessed to have had him as our son and brother.”
