Fundraising swim for RNLI to take place in Waterford

After two false starts, thanks to poor sea conditions, the 30th Annual RNLI Helvick Swim in aid of the RNLI is set to take place on Sunday, August 17.
It's anticipated that more than 100 hardy swimmers will take to the water, choosing either the 4km crossing from Ballinacourty Point or the shorter 2km route, with the shimmering bay as their backdrop and, hopefully, the late-summer sun on their side.
However, a spokesperson for Helvick RNLI said it’s not just the swimmers who will be out in force.
"A flotilla of kayaks and RIBs will fan out across the water, shepherding the long line of participants safely towards Helvick Pier," he said.
"Among them will be 'The Robert Armstrong', RNLI Helvick’s B Class Atlantic lifeboat, standing by as the ultimate safety net," he added.
It's expected that the on-the-pier celebrations will be just as lively.
"Locals and visitors are urged to head down early to grab a good spot and soak up the atmosphere," said the spokesperson.
"There’ll be a BBQ burger cookout, a raffle packed with local prizes, the ever-entertaining King and Queen of Helvick competition, a dog show for four-legged fans, and stalls selling RNLI souvenirs," he added.
Commenting on the event RNLI Helvick Fundraising Committee Chairman Kevin O’Morchoe said: “The Helvick Swim is a highlight of our year, not only because it raises vital funds, but also because it showcases the spirit of this community — on the water and on the pier."
"We look forward to seeing swimmers, supporters and families join us for what promises to be a fantastic day," said Kevin.
Proceeds from this event directly fund operations at the RNLI.
