Man in court for hitting pedestrian with car on Waterford's Mall

The Mall, Waterford city where the incident occurred.

A man appeared in Waterford District Court for a collision, which occurred on the Mall in Waterford city last year.

On November 22, 2025, gardaí arrived at the Mall to find an injured man who had been struck by a vehicle. Initially, there was no vehicle at the scene.

Momentarily after gardaí arrived, however, a car approached. The driver informed gardaí that it was him who had hit the pedestrian.

The driver of the car was Martin Gildea (46), of Newtown, Tramore, who was charged with Section 52 Careless Driving.

The man's defence solicitor informed the judge that it had been a very wet night, and as Mr. Gildea was performing a u-turn near City Hall, a pedestrian suddenly appeared outside his vehicle.

The impact was described as minor and a full recovery was made.

Mr. Gildea was fined €200 for the offence.
