Fianna Fáil councillor and former Mayor of Waterford Jason Murphy was married to Nicola Coughlan at St John’s Church on Saturday, May 23.
The two met in Jordan’s pub.
Jason told the , “I go to Jordan’s every Saturday for a few pints and it was Nicola’s first time ever in Jordan's. She just happened to sit down next to me and the rest is history.”
Jason said that when they were in their early stages of dating, he told Nicola that due to his busy career in politics, he would only be able to see her “once every two or three weeks”.
“That plan quickly went out the window. We ended up spending every weekend together.”
A few months later, the couple were engaged at the Mayor’s Ball.
Nicola is the manager of Eye Catchers Opticians and lives on the Cork Road.
“She’s in the ward, which is always a plus for a politician,” joked Jason.
Jason revealed that he would be making the move to the Cork Road.
Jason said the couple were “delighted” with how the wedding day turned out.
“It was a good cross-section of society. Billy Kelleher MEP was chatting away to some of my friends who work at Morris’s.”
The reception of over 180 people was held in Faithlegg House Hotel where “everyone was dancing all night”.
“We both come from very social families who enjoy a few drinks and a bit of craic, which is important,” Jason said.
The day after their wedding, they hosted a party at O’Sullivan’s pub who “put on a great spread”, according to Jason.
Several local representatives offered their congratulations on social media, including Councillor Mary Roche, who said, “Wishing you both many years of happiness and health with each other,” and Councillor John Hearne, who said he expects to see Jason’s motorbike on Done Deal any day now.
The couple are heading to Italy on their honeymoon.
The News & Star wishes the couple the best of luck and sincere congratulations.
