Emergency services were called to the scene of a fire at a commercial premises in Waterford City over the weekend.

Last weekend, shoppers in Waterford City were left confused as the popular UK franchise store, Dealz (known as Poundland in the UK) was closed unexpectedly.

When customers approached the store on Michael Street, the doors were closed, staff members were not to be seen and the store was left in darkness.

A brief notice on the door stated that they apologised for the “inconvenience” to their customers, with little detail as to why the store had closed and when it is expected to reopen.

It had been reported that a fire broke out in the store over the weekend.

A spokesperson from Waterford Fire Station told the Waterford News & Star that an emergency call was received by the service at 8.31am on Saturday, June 22.

A commercial fire was reported in the store, to which four vehicles and two crews responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, the crew established that the fire had broken out on the first floor of the building. This led to two teams of breathing apparatus crew working to extinguish the fire on the upper floor of the building.

While the building has been damaged by both smoke and fire, no injuries were reported from the incident.

The fire was controlled by Waterford City Fire Station and extinguished by 10.20am. The reopening of the city store has not been confirmed as of yet and the Waterford News & Star awaits comment from the Dealz media spokesperson.
