Fire crews continue to tackle Comeragh Mountains fire

Waterford Fire Service crews continued to tackle the hillside fire in the Comeragh Mountains this evening.

A spokesperson for Waterford City & County Council said operations remain difficult and labour-intensive due to the steep terrain. 

"Crews are concentrating on containing the fire and preventing any further spread," he said.

"Wind direction remains changeable but is currently favourable to firefighting efforts," he added.

The spokesperson said conditions will continue to be closely monitored and Fire Service operations will continue over the weekend, with all available resources being deployed as required.

"There remains no risk to homes or other buildings," said the spokesperson.

However, members of the public are asked to avoid the Kilclooney and Coumshingaun area and not to undertake the Coumshingaun Loop Walk while operations are ongoing.

General HSE health advice in areas affected by smoke is as follows: Stay out of smoke and avoid areas affected by smoke where possible; Stay indoors if smoke levels are high in your area, provided it is safe to do so; Keep windows and doors closed to reduce smoke entering your home; Close vents and turn off systems that draw air in from outside, such as heat-exchange or air-conditioning systems; Reduce other sources of indoor air pollution, including cigarette smoke, wood-burning or propane stoves, aerosol sprays, and frying or grilling food; Avoid outdoor activity and exercise when conditions are smoky. Where outdoor activity is unavoidable, avoid strenuous exertion; Keep any medicines you use regularly with you, particularly inhalers, and take them as prescribed.

Anyone who experiences symptoms or has concerns after exposure to smoke should reduce their level of activity and seek prompt healthcare advice.
