Drivers 'extremely frustrated' at Stephen Street traffic congestion

Traffic at Stephen's Street in Waterford City
Concerns have been raised regarding the frequency at which traffic lights are changing at Stephen’s Street.
Cllr Frank Quinlan highlighted the problem this week, saying: “There is a big issue with the frequency of the lights at Stephen’s Street especially at school times in the morning and afternoon.
"Traffic lights allow only a few cars out each time causing backlogs of traffic and extremely frustrated drivers trying to get to work on time."
Cllr Quinlan outlined that traffic from Alexander Street, Patrick’s Street, O’Brien Street and Bachelors Walk are all merging into the same direction, causing a backlog of traffic.
He added that he spoke with Waterford Council’s Traffic Engineer about the issue.
He said: “I spoke to the Traffic Engineer to ask can it be looked at and priority be given to this direction, as no cars are allowed up Newgate Street and very few cars come in the direction of Barrack Street in the direction of Browns Lane compared to Stephen’s Street."
