"Does the fine fit the crime?"- Illegal dumping in Carn Glas

Illegal dumping took place in Carn Glas.

Residents in Carn Glas have reported a rise in illegal dumping.

During the current spate of sunny weather, locals have sadly encountered an uptick in rubbish abandoned in the greenery of the area.

At the May meeting of the Metropolitan Council, Councillor Frank Quinlan (Fine Gael) raised the issue to the Executive.

He referenced the 'lovely grass, plants and vegetation' in the area and how the large amount of rubbish casts a pall on the area. He said: "Residents in the area maintain it to the highest standards.

"It's a €150 fine for littering. Does the fine fit the crime? It's disgraceful."

Senior Executive Officer Dawn Wallace responded: "In relation fines for illegal dumping, the littering fines are set by the Litter Pollution Act, there aren't any fines as such for illegal dumping. We often resort to litter fines for expedience."
