Documents being prepared to explore construction of third river crossing in city

The possibility of a third crossing across the River Suir in Waterford city was discussed during a Council meeting yesterday.
It is understood that the preparation of a feasibility report is about to go to tender.
This report will look at potential locations and options.
A consultant will likely be appointed in the next few months, and a report completed in the middle of next year.
During yesterday’s meeting, Cllr Adam Wyse queried locations for the potential new bridge.
He said:
“In the feasibility study, the only option we’re looking at is a bridge going across the river from the Tower Hotel/Lombard Street area. I would be very wary of putting a bridge into that area because it is already extremely congested there.”
Cllr Wyse asked for Waterford to “think outside the box” and look at more ambitious projects.
He called for the possibility of building a tunnel to be looked at instead of a bridge.
Waterford Council Director of Services, Gabriel Hynes, said the feasibility report will look at all options.
He added that that a river crossing further outwards from the city may be an option, as this would help the city grow.
