The long distance between the new transport hub on the North Quays and the existing Bus Eireann bus station in Waterford city is a cause of concern.

Local councillor Pat Nugent said this week that people arriving via the new train station on the North Quays will have to then walk a considerable distance to get to the bus station on the south quays.

Cllr Nugent said, “The distance between the new train station and the Bus Eireann station is twice as long as what it is currently from Plunkett Station.

“People will have to get out of the new train station and walk across the new bridge and walk up from the clock tower to the bus station. That won’t happen unless its dry out, or else they’ll be very, very wet.

“The new train station will not be open until 2027, there’s plenty of time and I think something has to happen. Is there discussion between the Council and Bus Eireann about routes?"

Waterford City and County Council Director of Services, Michael Quinn, said that the Council have been is discussion with the National Transport Authority (NTA).

He added that the removal of plans for a shuttle bus across the new sustainable transport bridge has been a “big issue”.

“That is something we have raised with the NTA” he said.

The new train station is due to be opened in quarter two of 2027, and last week, Bus Eireann submitted plans to build expansions to the bus station on the south quays.
