A father-of-two from Waterford was ordered to pay back €100 to a cashier at a Waterford shop after he appeared in Waterford District Court on a deception charge.
It was alleged that Bela Munteanu, of 97 Doyle Street, Waterford, tricked the cashier at the shop to get a €100 discount on expensive shoes.
He was due to show up in Waterford District Court in June of last year but failed to appear until this week because he was “terrified he was going to be sent to prison", according to his solicitor.
It was alleged that on March 10, 2025, Munteanu bought a pair of shoes for €400 in Tommy Hilfiger’s on Barronstrand Street, in Waterford City.
He paid for the shoes in cash but then asked the cashier to give him the cash back so he could check it was the correct amount. When he handed the money back, he retained €100.
He was charged by Garda Eddie Weafer with Section 6 of the Theft Act which states 'a person who dishonestly, with the intention of making a gain for himself or herself or another, or of causing loss to another, by any deception induces another to do or refrain from doing an act is guilty of an offence'.
Munteanu (19), has no previous convictions, the court heard.
Judge Staunton applied Section 1.1 of the Probation Act and ordered Munteanu to return the €100 to the shop.
