Council buys historic pub in Waterford City

The Munster Bar in Waterford City has been a tavern since 1853.

Waterford City and County Council have recently purchased the Munster Bar on 11 The Mall. The building adjoins their headquarters, and it is understood that several doors on the upper floors are connected to City Hall.

The Munster Bar has served as a tavern since 1853 and has been owned by the Fitzgerald family for three generations since 1953.

According to Sherry Fitzgerald John Rohan and Halley Grace Auctioneers, due to the building’s prime location and established hospitality profile, the building attracted significant interest.

According to Mr Rohan, Union Bar and Restaurant will continue to operate from the premises and is not affected by the sale.

He said the restaurant “remains securely in place as a tenant and continues to contribute to the vibrant food and beverage offering within the Viking Triangle”.

A spokesperson for Waterford City and County Council said, “The acquisition of the Munster Bar was based on a strategic decision, and the Council is currently exploring a number of options for its future use.”
