Bylaws needed before safety warnings can be placed on Waterford beaches
Signs prohibiting the playing of football or hurling by the beach requested by local councilor
With reports of an individual being struck in the head by a flying sliotar at a local beach this past week and experiencing concussion symptoms the following day, local independent councilor Donal Barry asked Waterford City and County Council to add safety and enforcement signs to all Waterford beaches.
At a recent metropolitan district meeting, Cllr Barry said: "Given the potential for serious injury from sliotars travelling at speed, I am requesting additional signage be installed on our beaches advising that the playing of hurling and football is not permitted in these areas, in the interest of public safety."
He was informed by Waterford City and County Council Executives that adding the signs to Waterford beaches would mean altering the existing beach bylaws, a process that may take some time.
