A bird fell out of the sky and landed in front of a tidy towns volunteer in Waterford, according to Councillor Thomas Phelan.
The councillor said at the March sitting of the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council that attempts have been made to contact the department responsible for investigating bird flu but nobody will answer the phone.
“At the tidy towns, not this Sunday but the Sunday before, a bird fell out of the sky next to one of our volunteers.
"We contacted the phone number for the department where you can give information on the topical issue of bird flu at the moment and no answer.
“Subsequently, I have heard from other people who have come across birds where they never have before and they tried the number, but no response,” said Cllr Phelan.
He said avian flu is of great concern not only for the risk to wildlife but also the poultry industry and asked the council to reach out.
“Can we contact that department and ask them what the point is in having that number if they are not going to respond to people who genuinely concerned about finding birds especially as I said a t a time when avian flu is a worry and a concern,” said Cllr Phelan.
Senior Executive Officer in the Environment Department, Dawn Wallace said that they would look at the number.
“I may not have any more success than you have but I will certainly look into it,” said Ms Wallace.
