BAM granted Abbey Road closure extension as school traffic returns

The Abbey Road will be closed while schools return from summer holidays as an extension has been requested by BAM from Waterford City and County Council.

A two-week extension of the closure of Abbey Road in Ferrybank has been granted by Waterford City and Council to BAM, which means the road closure will still be in place as the schools return from summer holidays.

BAM, the main contractor on the North Quays Public Infrastructure Project, has advised that the extension, until August 30, is to facilitate essential works for a deep foul sewer, new retaining wall and finishing works.

BAM has apologised for the inconvenience and stated that the company aims to "complete the works in an efficient and timely manner" with consideration for the "numerous other unforeseen factors affecting the works in this area.

"We are conscious of, and regret the disruption to the traffic flows, particularly as the school term commences. We have contacted local schools and businesses in the area, informing them of the extended closure period," it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Waterford City and County Council has found the situation "disappointing" and "regrets the disruption that will be caused at the start of the new school term, as well as the ongoing disruption to local residents, businesses and bus services. It is also recognised that the works must be completed in a safe and orderly manner within a confined works area."
