'Deadly' paved surfaces are causing people to suffer painful accidents around Waterford City, said a Councillor.

Councillor Jason Murphy (Fianna Fáil) raised the issue of cracked footpaths in the city at the recent Metro meeting.

He said: "I was at an event at the city centre last Saturday, and 10 yards away from me an elderly lady had quite a serious fall. She was with her daughter.

"She ended up dislocating her shoulder." According to Cllr Murphy, she fell over a 'very bad piece of pavement'.

He continued: "I think the paving around Barronstrand and John Roberts Square is in an atrocious state.

"It's actually deadly on a wet day but this was on a day wen the sun was splitting rocks, last Saturday."

While waiting with the lady for the emergency services, Cllr Murphy learned that similar incidents had occurred over the last few weeks.

He asked for the issue to be looked into and to find out how much people have had to claim from the Council over these accidents.

He said: "As a matter of fact, I'd like to see the figures on the amount of claims have been made against the Council for falls in our city center, particularly around that area. I think it's now becoming a hazard."

"I think it's it's it's deadly for for everyone, but particularly for people with mobility issues and elderly people."
