A Ferrybank man described as "an active member of the community" was sentenced for multiple drug offences and money laundering at Waterford Circuit Court last week.

Alan Flavin, of St. Killian’s Place, Ferrybank, pleaded guilty to two section 15 drug dealing counts and one count of money laundering in November 2023.

He appeared for sentencing last Wednesday before Judge Eugene O'Kelly.

Events

In 2023, a search warrant for Mr. Flavin's residence was obtained by Gardaí on the suspicion that cannabis was being sold.

Upon searching the property, a large quantity of cannabis, cocaine and a cocaine press was found in the garden shed.

The total value of substances was approximately €8,000. €2,950 in cash was also seized.

Mr. Flavin was subsequently interviewed by Gardaí. He made no comments.

Defense

Flavin's defense counsel outlined that he had an "excellent work history" and currently works as a professional driver.

He was described as being active in the community and in local sports clubs.

A letter of apology was handed into the court from Mr. Flavin, along with a letter from the man’s partner who described him as a “wonderful father” and the “rock of the family”.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly enquired further about these comments, asking whether the man's partner realises that Mr. Flavin was “dealing misery out to others”.

He also emphasised that Flavin was a drug dealer who had access to young people.

Sentencing

In sentencing the man, Judge O’Kelly took into account his early entry of a guilty plea and his zero previous convictions.

He outlined, however, that Flavin had amassed drug debts and showed reluctance to provide his mobile phone pin to gardaí during the search.

Alan Flavin received a sentence of three years on both drug dealing counts, suspended in full for a period of three years.

For the single money laundering count, he received 200 hours of community service in lieu of an 18 month sentence.
