The Minister for Mental Health & Older People, Mary Butler TD, has announced €456,903 in equipment grants for Waterford sports clubs and organisations.
Making the funding announcement, which comes under the latest round of the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme (SCEP), Minister Butler said over €26 million in equipment grants would be allocated to sports organisations across the country.
“I am delighted to see so many of the sporting organisations in Waterford, with whom I have worked with over recent months, receive funding for equipment to supplement their work and enhance the experience of club members,” she said.
She said such organisations play a central role in communities and commented: “They provide opportunities for people to participate in healthy activities which are hugely beneficial for their physical and mental health.”
“They also allow us to enjoy the successes of local teams and our sporting heroes at higher levels, from inter county all the way to the international stage,” she said.
Minister Butler also said it was important to appreciate “the many volunteers” who are the beating heart of sports clubs in Waterford.
“The great sporting infrastructure we have in this county is a direct result of their application to local sport,” she said.
“It is their endeavour and effort which facilitates allocations of funding such as this,” she added.
She went on to comment: “Further allocations under the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme, including those for capital works, and capital works tied with an equipment component, will be announced at a later date.” “We are confident that the revised allocations under the National Development Plan will also allow for significant funding to be allocated for capital works when the necessary assessments for those applications are completed,” she said.
“I look forward to confirming further capital funding for Waterford’s sporting organisations under the Sports Capital and Programme later this year,” she added.
