A man in his 60s has died, and two men are injured following a two-car collision on the N55 at The Pigeons, Co. Westmeath on Thursday.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the collision, involving two cars, which occurred at approximately 11 am.

The male driver of one of the cars, aged in his 60s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

His body has since been removed to the mortuary at Tullamore General Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

A male passenger, aged in his 80s, was conveyed to Tullamore General Hospital to receive treatment for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

The driver of the second car, a man aged in his 80s, was also conveyed to Tullamore General Hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be non life-threatening at this time.

No other injuries were reported.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators have completed a technical examination of the scene. The road remains closed with local diversions in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 10.15am and 11.15 am are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
