Going to the gym and the explosion of health and fitness fads we have seen over the last year is probably on a level we have never seen before.

More and more gyms are opening up, more and more trends surfacing, crossfit, hyrox, bodybuilding, etc. The list goes on!

So what’s all the hype and why are so many people starting to engage in more physical activity?

In this article I hope to unpack this as best I can.

First things first, it goes without saying, people are starting to take their health and fitness more seriously, and as a byproduct - they are venturing down many avenues to this.

People are starting to feel and better understand the important role our health and fitness plays in our overall health and wellbeing, not to mention our wellbeing and quality of life as we get older.

Participating in activities that strengthen our muscles, bones and connective tissue is what helps us to build stronger, more resilient bodies.

As we age, we can start to see a reduction in many important variables when it comes to muscles and bones with approximately 1-2% of lean muscle mass lost per year once we hit our 40’s.

Having a training regime and regular training regime helps to resist this and oftentimes improves things.

There are also notable benefits seen in our bone density, strength and function to boot.

These strength training regimes, paired with some form of activity that is more targeted towards our heart and lungs can help to amplify the benefits we get from exercise.

This can be a brisk walk, a jog or even a spin class at your local gym.

Some of you may instead be partial to something more social like a local 5-a-side league.

These are all great habits to get into.

Having a training regime which involves a mix of lifting weights to challenge each major muscle group at least two days a week with two to three cardio sessions across the week can set you up to be in a great place when it comes to being proactive in preserving your physical and even mental health as you age, not mention reducing the risk of developing a plethora of health conditions down the line.

Exercise challenges your body to adapt, with the right dosage and through activities you enjoy - the benefits can be endless once you find your groove and embrace the unknown.

If you’re reading this and still unsure - you’d better give it a go for a few weeks and experience this food yourself - your future self will thank you.
